I try not to stereotype because I get stereotyped all the time BUT
a significant number of your fanbase does things that are wrong, reprehensible, inappropriate, vile, (I don't know pick another word) and a significant number actually see that behavior and look away or do nothing. While I try not to stereotype, your fans make it tough not to. My reference to "significant" doesn't have a percentage like 67% - "significant" is just a reference to more than you'd expect or like to see.

These are my quick experiences at RES:
1) body-checked/belly bumped, threatened, and cursed at in front of my two boys (8 and 12);
2) kneed in the thigh by an older lady on the train while her husband sat sheepishly watching;
3) hit with a snowball in the back of the head;
4) dodged a large cup of beer but was sprayed by it as it made a direct hit on a BYU cheerleader standing next to me (incidentally numerous cups of beer were hurled at us (BYU fans while on the field at RES);
5) Called all sorts of names while walking to, walking around, and using the restroom e.g. F'ing mormon, F'you, F(pick the phrase)

BTW, I still love attending games at RES because I've been there when we win and it's awesome when that happens. I always tell my Ute friends, "it's one thing to be yelled at by BYU fans e.g. you suck, go home, "ugly", etc, etc, etc, but have someone yell at you with a curse word and link that word to some denigration of your religion, or family, or something wholly unrelated to football or sports - that makes all the difference.

My experience isn't unique unfortunately (I know this board has had an airing of grievances in the past) BUT I would guess you would never find a single Ute fan who experienced 1-5 above during a game at BYU (of course #4 would be next to impossible). I say Ute fans, stop trying to compare the experiences as the same and grow some thick skin when it comes to BYU fans yelling tame words or comments at you - all fan bases do this but some take it too far i.e. Utah.

Of course I'm stereotyping how both fan bases act and react - I only said i "try not to stereotype".

I would never say I'm better at life than anyone - I've certainly have my share of weaknesses, so I actually agree with some of your observations e.g. reach out to others, be more accepting. I didn't grow up here but I love Utah even though I have experienced and continue to experience judgmental behavior from members - I have thick skin so that stuff rolls off my back and quite frankly I don't give a rat's A what others think of me. I suggest you do the same.

Stop trying to find offense with all the weak BYU fan smack talk (and perceived judgmental comments) because it pales in comparison to the words and behavior hurled our way by Utah fans.

geez that was long - sorry.
