I don't think that's entirely true.
Staying away from the church reference, I think that's exactly what some of the behavior and financial shaming smack is. It's, "well, we didn't win the game, but you guys are cretins and we're still better than you." At least that's how it's interpreted. What else is discrediting your opponent than to make oneself feel superior - especially after a loss?
