We've had a few really good horror movies this year, with possibly more to come.

Us and Midsommar come to mind. Agree that traditional horror films are terrible, built on loud noises and squeamish imagery. However, I love the direction that genre is starting to take, as a canvas to be experimental and convey some rather complex ideas.

Psycholgical horror films can save the genre. Slasher style blood and gore are the worst.

Yep. The Shining, Silence of the Lambs (widely considered horror), The Babadook, etc. are all great movies.
