I am sure BYU is no different than any other D-1 institution with regards to that.
When I was on the swim team at the U, we met with our academic counselor to get our schedules approved before registering. I was studying engineering, so my schedule was pretty set and easy to plan out most quarters, but one time I needed a general Ed class to fill out my schedule. My counselor asked me if I wanted a class where I’d learn a lot and be challenged or just an “easy A”. I took the easy A option and ended up in a class that was 95% athletes.
