True story: My nephew was arrested and charged with a felony for firing a potato cannon.
My nephew already had his mission call, and was just waiting to go. He was hanging out with his cousins one day (two other nephews of mine), and they had a potato cannon they had just made. So, they went across the road where there was an enormous housing development that was just in the dirt/grading stages--so piles of dirt everywhere, and nothing else.

They fired off the cannon, and then a cop stepped out from behind a dirt pile and told them to freeze (don't remember if he had his gun drawn). The two brothers took off on their bikes, but my almost-missionary nephew, who was holding the cannon couldn't see why they'd be in trouble. He just stayed there.

The cop arrested him, and charged him with firing at a police officer. Of course, they had no idea he was hiding behind the pile of dirt. Apparently he had spotted them walking through the development carrying a big pipe thing, and followed them because they looked suspicious. He parked his car behind the pile of dirt, and got out to secretly watch them.

I'm not sure if it was illegal to shoot a potato cannon there or not, but the "firing at an officer" charge was completely ridiculous. I believe the charge was dismissed, and luckily it didn't hold up my nephew's mission at all.
