The counter is that you don't want to be predictable.
The common wisdom after Tenn's prior loss was to run at them. But that'd have been obvious, so we didn't immediately run. I was actually pleased to see some passing in short yardage situations. Not all, but some. BYU's hallmark used to be the ball control passing game, and I thought I saw some of that Saturday. If you always run in short yardage situations, unless your line is really that much better than the other team's (plus anyone else it wants to stack the box with) you have to mix it up. A short pass in an obvious running situation can sometimes just be more open.
