Because he was a 3rd string QB.
Everyone is at risk on ST, and it's tough to lose anyone to injury because the roster is already so limited. Any other person used on ST would be far more likely to see the field in regular PT than Taysom. In fact, a 3rd string QB is probably the least likely of anyone on an NFL roster to see the field. In the bigger scheme, it's a lower risk than not, and he was an asset instead of a liability in that role.
Of course, now that he's much more likely to see the field, they'll almost certainly pull him from that role.

No reason to think Taysom couldn't play for another decade @ QB. Obviously he won't by taking those shots NFL type hits
