prefer to cheer for the underdog or less famous team in most cases, especially if the teams are so highly ranked that the loser will still be way ahead of BYU, or if the rankings are close.
For example, I will definitely be pulling for Wisconsin over Michigan on Saturday, and for Notre Dame over Georgia.
Another thought: maybe you should add a rule that we cheer for next year’s opponents. The rankings and perception early in the year is largely a function of how well a team did the year before, so BYU benefits, generally speaking, if our opponents were good the year before we play them.
So, we should want Houston to beat Tulane tonight, since we play Houston next season. And we will probably benefit next year from Michigan State, ASU, Minnesota, Missouri, etc winning a lot this year.
