I think you've overestimated Detmer's coaching ability and have bought into stories a bit too much...

Detmer simply wasn't even a good coach at this point... he was badly exposed, even as a position coach. No QB did well under him, his recruiting was awful. It was a pipe dream plus extra that he was going to amount to anything coming in as a First Time coach as an OC. Ridiculous idea and thought process all in one.
