as seems popular on CB every year-actually everyday. I liked Bronco as a coach, still find him to be a good coach, and didn’t understand why fans always thought there was some magical coach out there that would surpass his results and wanted him gone, just as I don’t understand it now with Kalani. Neither Bronco nor Kalani have reached a BCS/NY6 bowl game with BYU which means at some point they have always laid an egg somewhere in the season. Both have had very bad losses. If I remember right, people were done with Bronco after the Utah 54-10 loss. We could go on all night picking and choosing games/teams to compare to each other from both eras and argue how well coaches adjusted, players adjusted, schemes adjusted, etc. If Kalani repeats 2017 then absolutely he’s not the guy for the job and we should find someone else. However, if he beats the G5s with maybe a loss to one of USU or BSU then he’s no different than Bronco. The real issue is that under the current circumstances of BYU’s self-imposed disadvantages (we all know them: honor code, LDS head coach, academic standards, yadee yada) we shouldn’t expect our coaches to not lose to more talented P5 teams, even occasionally lose badly (as ALL BYU coaches have done) until we make changes to those self-imposed disadvantages. Otherwise, it’s insanity to trying to find an LDS coach at BYU’s pay rate because then we’ll get someone inexperienced that has to get used to the BYU learning curve. If we go for a new coach, then at the very least we better pull out BIG MONEY to get a top LDS coach here. If that won’t happen then they need to start searching for non-LDS coaches to widen the pool.
