On the topic of career choices and dream chasing...
Since there was a conversation earlier about dream job vs money I thought I'd ask for some insight on the situation with my older brother. My older brother (mid thirties) is a faculty member at a historically good football program and makes great money (about $200k) with a very laid back lifestyle (lots of time off, working from home, only teaching a couple classes one semester per year, chance for tenure). He's married with 4 kids with ages ranging from 2-10, seemingly very happy. He told me about a year ago about his plan for a career change. He's always dreamed of being a doctor but never actually pursued medical school since he thought he liked the field he originally chose and was successful in it. He says now, 5 years after finishing grad school, that he feels unfulfilled and unhappy in his career choice because he feels like he doesn't make an actual difference in the world and thinks that medicine would allow him to do that. His wife is standing beside him 100%. Me, a current medical school applicant, feels torn. Do I want my brother to be happy and fulfilled in his career? Yes. Do I think that he's making a very bad decision for his family's sake in terms of finances and time away from home? Also yes. My opinion is that he finds something in his free time that allows him to feel some of that "fulfillment" that he desires without uprooting his whole family. What say ye, CB? Should he pursue his dreams or should he stick very it out to maintain a very secure, well paying career?
