The coaches have completely abandoned any kind of coaching of fundamentals. Our team isn't doing the simple of simplest things right, right now. Our tackling is atrocious right now... We tackle like a lot of high school teams tackle... it's sloppy, driving at ball carriers, arm tackling.... there is no wrapping up. We over pursue, players look like they are guessing... there are effort issues... there is basic shed techniques that we are sloppy at. Cover skills are real bad.
And I get the feeling that this is what the coaches are trying to correct now... but it's too late. This is crap you work on in spring and early summer practices. When you'e got the fundamentals down at this speed of the game, and are crisp at them... then you get to see the team you have.
Our coaches are trying to see the team we have based on how we run plays... that's garbage! I really feel that Sitake came in his first season and focused a ton on fundamentals, it showed... it was one of the best tackling teams we had had in a while... and I don't think they have worked on it at all since. I'd be shocked if we have... and IF we have, it's safe to say that we have a group of athletes that have no business playing football at this level. I personally don't think that's entirely the case.
Coaches will figure out your system and they will beat it... it's the fundamentals that will keep your system intact and you are able to beat the other team with it time and time again.
Whittingham has been running the same defense for almost 20 years now... and everyone still has problems with it. Fundamentals at this speed of the game is the difference maker... and Tuiaki and Sitake have abandoned them 100%.
