Tone and context. If you have African American friends and
white friends and all call each other “boy” with no intent to try and demean it’s not racist. However, if you only refer to African Americans as “boy”, but not your white friendship and you do it with the intent to demean it is racist. You weren’t using it in a racist manner. Many people do. I surprised you never heard this before the Westbrook incident.
