Hiring less experienced guys on the same side of the ball as the HC is a common
Practice. Let's not pretend byu is making some drastic mistake doing this. Of course it looks bad if the guy doesn't turn out. But I'd bet most often it does. The HC mentors him for a while and helps him get his feet wet. This is also a good way to save money to hire the big experience on the opposite side of the ball where they can hold their own.

Thr difference is that you can't turn him loose too soon. That's the problem, not hiring the inexperience in the first place.
