Most coaches, I believe have a small sense of the pros and cons of athletes, who put their cleats or Nike’s up for two years.
If they thought it was a big advantage, wouldn’t more coaches be sending players on similar service programs. The two-year waiver is not limited to missions by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints.
Bronco shared with Cougarclub after attending a coaches conference. The coaches wanted to know how he could continue to win with the barriers he faced at BYU: 1) missions; 2) honor code; 3) educational standards; etc. Yes, in that order (I checked my journal).
His response was long but basically moved beyond just recruiting kids regardless of their academics or personal standards. But recruit kids who could play, handle the honor code and academics and prepare for life.
Bronco mentioned the average player last less than four years at the NFL level. He shared the percentage which was huge of players within ten years of leaving college was addicted to pain meds, were bankrupt and divorced.
His and the schools focus is helping a young man be successful in all aspects of his life and provide for the next forty years.
He left most speechless.
