Utah is the only game in town for some people..
I know people who only like UofU sports because it's P5 and NOT related to 'the church'. Its a good program, they put on a good show... its easy to root for the home team even if you have no connection other than living there.

My entire family went to the U (including me)... We grew up U fans because it was literally in our back yard. At the same time, growing up in the 80's BYU was the big program so we also liked BYU.

What most people misunderstand now, is that fewer and fewer kids in the state of Utah get accepted to BYU. BYU has a limited number of kids applying due to academic standards, and only a 50% acceptance rate (statistically only 30% of BYU students are from Utah).

The costs of the UofU are skyrocketing. Most of the parents I know who have kids at the U are paying ~$15k a semester (less if they are living at home).

Both of those are putting more kids at UVU, Dixie, SUU, and Weber...

The simple fact is... Today, most local kids DONT GO TO EITHER SCHOOL.

You pick a team to root for then go out and buy the window sticker.
