I agree the benefits aren’t large, but there are some:
-Residents are more likely to stay in the state and community where they do residency
-It’s likely that there would be lots of LDS applicants. Residencies are becoming harder and harder to get, while getting into a medical school is, if anything, easier now than at any time in the last twenty years due to high DO school growth and increased awareness of Caribbean schools.
-GME programs do produce some research. I imagine the faculty would have appointments at BYU as well.
