Between Pat Hayden and Lynn Swann... they have made a series of bad decisions that has turned what SHOULD be one of the most prestigious football programs in America into a dysfunctional mess. I actually think Clay Helton is a very good coach- who would be a great coach at virtually any other program in the country. Unfortunately for him, he lacks the "star power" that USC always seems to be looking for.
In a way, coaching at USC is a lot like coaching at BYU- but also very different. It's alike in that it's a LOT more than just coaching football. You have the expectation to be competing for a national championship EVERY YEAR. (Most BYU fans are not that delusional- but we do expect 8-9-10 wins a year.) You have to deal with recruiting 5-star high school players, with massive egos, and families who expect their kids to play on Sunday. You have to keep your kids out of trouble- in Hollywood- where celebrities/athletes/etc provide access to unwholesome activities.
You look at the number of coaches who have been hired there, in the last 25 years... only ONE has really succeeded- Pete Carroll. But, he also presided over one of the biggest scandals in NCAA history.
Ogeron wanted the USC job, and USC stupidly gave it to someone else... I would make the argument that Coach O lucked out BIG TIME! LSU is an awesome program, and he's got a very good thing going- an opportunity he likely wouldn't have had had he been given the USC job.
