It's because when BYU and TCU were in the MTN west conference the BYU President

Introduced either Coach Patterson or the TCU president as part of "Texas Christian University" and the coach or pres immediately corrected him when he got to the podium and said "We prefer to be known as TCU."

But I don't know anything else beyond that so perhaps that was just a one-off situation?
