Each team starts the year with the land adjacent to their stadium. When you beat someone who has land, you take their land. When you lose, you surrender your owned land to that team. They track it over the course of a season.

We didn't have land after losing to Utah, but gained land after beating USC.

We then lost it to Washington, but beating Boise gave us a lot of land.
