In this case, where Kyle has an incurable disease, I think it is warranted.
The Lord factors in what we desire and I'm sure Kyle would desire to be made physically whole again (and able to finish his college classes) if he could. I saw in a Deseret News pix in the article that he has three beautiful daughters. I bet he'd like to finish his degree for them, too.
