If he takes the HC job at BYU and fails (and given the honor code, G5 recruiting reality, funding issues, etc. that is a very real possibility) he would be sacrificing his opportunity for a HC job at the next level (and probably much more than BYU can pay). So I can understand why he might pass, even though it would be a big raise.
