The D put the O in positions to have to make long drives all year to score.
Now the O struggled in the scoring zone, and missed many FGs. That is their fault and needed to improve. But the D gave up so many long fields, and in our losses we lost the starting field position battle, which is no coincidence. The O had to drive long distances to get TDs in 2019 and that is not sustainable.
A D has to do more than limit points. It has to help the O was field position. BYU D didn't in 2019, but especially in all 5 losses, which is no coincidence. And the O moved the ball in all 5 of those games too. I'd say STs lost 2-3 of those 5 games more than the O did, which is another matter. But still the D's job is more than limit points.
