My guess/proposal how an 8 team playoff w/ NY6 could work logistically
I posted this in another thread but decided to also repost it w/ a new thread as well. This would assume an 8 team playoff w/ the 5 P5 champs and highest ranked G5 champ getting auto-bids along w/ 2 at-larges along w/ maintaining conference tie-ins for the major bowls.

You'd have 1st round at campus sites w/ semis and championship played at the neutral sites like they currently are. The NY6 would still be a thing similar to now but would be slightly different. You'd have 2 of the semis be from the NY6 games w/ the other 4 NY6 games having the 4 1st-round losers combined w/ an additional 4 teams that didn't make the playoff. The only other modification is you'd probably have to have the 1st round games prior to announcing the specific NY6 bowl matchups if you want to guarantee conference affiliation. 2nd Saturday of December would be the 1st round of the playoffs. If that causes issues w/ other bowl announcements then maybe adjust the rotation and have the 4 non-playoff NY6 teams be guaranteed to be from the 2 contract bowls not taking part in the playoff that year.

Here is an example of how that could work this year:

Playoffs:
1 LSU vs 17 Memphis
4 Oklahoma vs 5 Georgia
2 Ohio St vs 7 Baylor
3 Clemson vs 6 Oregon

Other teams select for the other NY6 bowls would depend on the specific rotation (which would have to be adjusted to make this work). Semifinal rotation would rotate between Rose/Peach, Fiesta/Sugar, and Cotton/Orange. Additional teams under each bowl scenario would be as follows:

w/ Rose & Peach as semis:
8 Wisconsin
9 Florida
24 Virginia
25 Oklahoma St

w/ Fiesta & Sugar as semis:
8 Wisconsin
9 Florida
11 Utah
24 Virginia

w/ Cotton & Orange as semis:
8 Wisconsin
9 Florida
11 Utah
25 Oklahoma St

Those 4 teams would join the 4 1st round losers to play in the non-playoff NY6 bowls. For illustration purposes, lets assume the higher seeds win in the 1st round. They non-playoff matchups would be as follows (broken down by potential bowl rotation):

w/ Rose & Peach as semis:
Sugar: 5 Georgia vs 7 Baylor
Orange: 24 Virginia vs 8 Wisconsin
Fiesta: 6 Oregon vs 9 Florida
Cotton: 17 Memphis vs 25 Oklahoma St

w/ Fiesta & Sugar as semis:
Rose: 6 Oregon vs 8 Wisconsin
Orange: 24 Virginia vs 9 Florida
Cotton: 11 Utah vs 17 Memphis
Peach: 5 Georgia vs 7 Baylor

w/ Cotton & Orange as semis:
Rose: 6 Oregon vs 8 Wisconsin
Sugar: 5 Georgia vs 7 Baylor
Fiesta: 11 Utah vs 25 Oklahoma St
Peach: 8 Wisconsin vs 9 Florida

The specific matchups could vary for those bowls depending on who loses in 1st round, but the advantage is you'd know which teams would be involved PRIOR to the 1st round games so that other bowl matchups could be set as well.
