D1 is about 340 or so teams from 32 or so conferences
It's everyone eligible to play in the 68 team NCAA tournament. Compared to football, think of it as FBS and FCS combined, plus some schools that don't play football. In football it used to be easier to see that when it used to be called D1-A and D1-AA.
