The 2020-21 outlook looks great despite the gloom and doom
1) The quarterback room looks more promising than at any season in the last 20+ years. The overall quarterback rating was the 2nd highest this decade. Wilson had his struggles this season, but he'll get a chance to redeem himself with a full healthy offseason of working with his receivers, playing spring ball, watching film, etc. If he doesn't make a leap next season, the two guys behind him look like they could easily take the reins without a big drop off.

2) The running back depth looks better than any in recent memory. The tandem of freshmen and sophomore (Finau, McChesney, Allgeier, and Katoa) combined for 1,110 yards and a 5.97 yard average. While I think the group needs an alpha player as RB1 like Ty'son was, the RB2 to RB5 spots look like all very good players with some upside. The two running back recruits coming in look like they could contribute immediately.

3) The wide receiver group loses 3 key players, but the positive thing is the coaching seems to have progressed the group. The experienced trio coming back (Pau'u, Milne, and Romney) all will need to be coached up. The two new recruits (Epps and Jackson) plus Keanu Hill look like bigger talents than the departing seniors. The coaches will play a numbers game to find other good players to add to the rotation.

4) The offensive line was inconsistent and didn't live up to expectations, but part of that was due to injuries to 3 of the top 8. They rotated in a bunch of players with no experience including a true freshman. The group loses no key contributors going into 2020 and the best players in the group are underclassmen (Empey and Christensen).

5) The tight end was about what we expected. Bushman finally made a slight leap and ended the season with the most yards since Dennis Pitta. It'll be interesting to see what Bushman does with the NFL draft. If he goes early, the position group is arguably the most talented on the team with almost all of them with multiple P5 offers out of HS.

6) On defense, the team loses 2 of the top 17 tacklers (3 if Tonga to the NFL). It took the coaches half of this season to figure out which of the new players should be playing more. This should pay dividends as we go into next season and 2021. There are a bunch of new adds that could bolster the pass rush and allow the coaches to get more aggressive.

The elephant in the room is coaching. The 2019 team clearly underachieved, but all the bad losses were on the road in one score games with underclassmen leading the way. The coaches will need to be more aggressive and learn how to close teams out. The experience level of the key players should help mitigate the weaknesses of the coaches. The coaches are gaining experience and I'm confident they will improve. They put together a young and competitive roster, which they should get credit for.

I am excited about 2020-21. The ceiling of the team is much higher than most on CB believe it to be. I am going to be buying my tickets and enjoy the ride.
