Rather, your post was really about not lowering expectations too far. I refuse to believe we can’t beat Utah half the time. The “known” disadvantages are also advantages if played right. Yes, we should beat Toledo, USF, SDSU and Hawaii (11-2 rather than 7-6). But the old BYU would also dominate the WAC version of Utah and occasionally beat a solid Pac-10/12 team like Washington and Utah are now. I see no reason we can’t get back there with good coaching. Boise State and UCF don’t have the resources we do and did what I’m describing. Navy has done what I’m describing under Ken, within more restrictive recruiting limitations. It’s coaching and discipline that make the difference. Lavell had coaching and innovative schemes and won. Bronco had discipline and won. Another good coach could do the same, and recruits would come. Keep the LDS kids and we compete. It’s not inconceivable and I think expectations should be set there. If we were SDSU, I’d be agreeing with you.
