For their respective teams Bronco and Whittingham are good coaches
But are they great coaches. Coaches that perform on and off the field and mentor their staff.

Again, both are proving it on the field. However, IMO they are not great coaches either by error or design. My opinion is that both are such control figures, they don’t develop their assistants.

Case in point: Bronco’s coaching tree is the shortest, as his assistants mostly followed him to Virginia. Try to recall an assistant that moved on as an assistant, coordinator or head coach to another school or NFL.

Whittingham’s coaching tree after 16 years is a little better. coaches moving on include: Gary Anderson; Jay Hill; and Troy Taylor. Morgan Sculley if true could be the next HC at uu.

Now compare these two with coach Edwards. Productive on the field while hiring and grooming coaches wanted at all levels. Fifty-five in total that are recognized for their ties to Edwards.

NFL coaches: Brian Bullock; Mike Holmgren and Andy Reid

College Head Coach’s: (20) whom in part include Norm Chow, Dave Kragthorpe, Ed Lamb, Steve Sarkisian, Doug Scovill, Kalani Sitake, Charlie Stubbs, Ted Tolbert, DeWayne Walker and yes Kyle Whittingham to name some.

NFL and College Coordinators: (14) whom in part include Robert Anae, Mike Canales, Dick Felt, Roger French, Brian Mitchell, Fred Whittingham, ken Schmidt to name some.

Colle Assistants: (18) whom in part include Mel Olsen, Dennis Simmons, Fred Whittingham JR to name a few.

Other connections tied to Coach Edwards: Mike Leach, Hal Mumme, and Matt Edwards.

We often hear of the influences the great coaches have throughout the game. This influence is almost always tied to coaches, who were mentored by the greats.

I am not trying to take away from the above coaches on the field success. Just pointing out the lack of these coaches mentoring assistants to be prepared and wanted to move on to greater responsibilities elsewhere.
