the lack of promotion ability or pay raises
working for the government has some definite benefits, I won't lie.

but the biggest downside for me is there is really nowhere to go from my job. I can't work more hours and get paid overtime. I can't get any pay raises because I'm already at the top of my pay scale. To move up in pay scale I would need to get a supervisor job, but there's only one supervisor job and it's taken. There's maybe 4-5 supervisor attorney jobs in all of San Antonio, which may not need to have a replacement hired for another 10 years. Even looking at moving around the country, there's not a lot out there, so every opening gets 100+ applicants and it's hard to get in there even for an interview.
