Braces have the opportunity to cause more damage to mouth in general if a child isn't mature enough to spend take the extra time and energy needed to maintain the braces.
My parents basically decided I was getting braces and I just kind of went along with it as a teenager and I wasn't the best at consistently brushing my teeth thoroughly and I'm still dealing with it today.
I would think it is much easier for children to clean braces than it was back in the 90's though with waterpiks available and all.
Hated using that little pipe cleaner brush to try and clean between spots in the braces.
