Partially true. The dosing actually starts out the same: 400 mg for most adults
and 600 mg for larger adults - and then increase up to 800 mg doses *only* if necessary - for chronic inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. 800 mg would be used for acute attacks of gout and stuff like that, but usually not long-term.

The OP stated he uses it "almost daily" and was wondering about long-term side effects, which I assumed meant he was buying the ibuprofen over-the-counter and dosing himself.

If he has some kind of severe chronic inflammatory condition that requires doses of ibuprofen more than 600 mg, he should probably be seen by a medical specialist and get a prescription. In which case, he should probably be taking the medicine *every* day, and probably should talk about its long-term effects with the physician who is prescribing it. And he should probably talk with his doctor about steroids and other kinds of anti-inflammatory drugs, but I think that goes beyond the scope of this thread.
