It's actually been there for a few years. The WCC was stronger at the top
in 2019 than it is this season, but BYU wasn't close enough to NCAA consideration for Cougar nation to care or pay attention.

In 2020, the WCC has an average Kenpom ranking of 127 (MWC average is 137).
In 2019, the WCC had an average Kenpom ranking of 129 (MWC average was 167).

In 2019, the WCC had 6 Top 135 teams and was the 2nd best league in the West:

2019 season ending Kenpom:

#2 Gonzaga
#31 SMC
#67 San Francisco
#86 BYU
#90 San Diego
#134 LMU

In 2018 the WCC was a bit weaker, with 4 Top 135 teams.
In 2017 the WCC had 5 Top 135 teams, similar to this season.

As the announcers have observed (FWIW) in more than one broadcast this year, the WCC is the top true mid-major league in the nation this season (you could argue the A-10 though). The MWC and MVC are a step or two behind where the WCC and A-10 are, and that was the case last season as well.
