"A friend went to lunch with Andy a handful of years ago while he was at his winning peak in Philly. Andy told my friend that he wanted to coach at BYU. Said he hadn't yet because the timelines hadn't lined up but expressed sincere interest."
Okay. I'm going to assume that this is 100% factually true.
A few things to remember, that are beyond dispute:
• This conversation took place when Andy was "at his winning peak" in Philadelphia. I don't know exactly when that was, but it was over at least 8 years ago. He's been at KC for 7 years.
• After 21 years as a HC in the NFL, he finally just won his first Super Bowl.
• He has one of the greatest QB's in the NFL, who is only 23, and could very viably win a few more Super Bowls.
• He is 61 years old.
• BYU is not where it was 8-10 years ago.
My extrapolation:
1. Goals and dreams change over time. When my wife and I got married, we wanted 6 kids. Now, we're happy with two. 10 years ago, I had a very strong desire to run for office someday. Today, I'd rather eat glass than run for office.
2. There's NO reason to believe that Kansas City can't be a contender for another 10 years. He could very easily retire at KC with a few more rings.
3. Andy Reid is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer. He's in his 60's. He's got a great job that is his- most likely- as long as he wants.
I don't question his love of BYU. I KNOW how much he loved LaVell. He's likely set for life, financially. However, things have changed both for Andy, and for BYU, in the last 10 years. Being the HC of the Kansas City Chiefs- with an MVP QB- is probably more fun and appealing than being the HC of a G5/Indy college football team with an Honor Code.
