I think membership and the evolution of the power conferences,
vis-à-vis schefuling, are major reasons. The power conference teams are scheduling more H/H series with other power conference teams.

The SEC which, in the past, rarely travelled westward, have 15 H/H series with PAC 12 schools, to be played out in this decade. They have at least that many against Big 12 schools. The BIG and Big 12 mandate that their members play10 power conference teams. Since Larry Scott opined that he wished PAC 12 schools also play 10, a rash of series of with P5s have been announced.

The ACC and SEC mandate that their schools play 9 P5 contests although UGA usually plays 10 and the second-largest AD at 'Bama stated that the Tide should play 10.

The opportunity for power conference opponents will continue to dwindle.
