That's a huge factor, but I think there are maybe half a dozen reasons
These reasons vary by the type of virus. E.g. viability of vectors during cold season (e.g. fewer mosquitos or birds in winter), viability of the virus in the cold (e.g., norovirus in cold/frozen water), immune dysfunction due to vitamin D deficiency (lack of sun). I totally agree with you that there's increased transmission due to things like school starting up or being indoors to avoid the cold.
