Interesting article with statistics on how quickly copper surfaces kill microbes, and how much they reduce the rate of
infection in hospital trials. Pretty strong argument for making high-contact surfaces (hand-rails, public drinking fountains, doorknobs, etc.) out of copper or copper alloys:
