There have always been "flu negative respiratory viruses"
That we don't test for.
Coronavirus is one of those.
It's very possible people had it and died from it but it was passed off as "just a virus".
They didn't have great testing till now.

Blood tests will be out eventually that look at antibodies specific to COVID-19
