millions of people being infected, there will be a great many young people that end up with serious issues including death. I've heard several reports from different ER docs that they see lots of young people end up on ventilators. I believe they mention the young people specifically because even they are surprised at how many young people this bug puts into big trouble. Clearly, most folks in ICUs and on ventilators are older.
This is a nasty bug. Listen to the great many healthcare professionals out there fighting this thing on a daily basis. Look at the overall numbers. This is not the flu. It's an order of magnitude more deadly, even for younger adults. And, it's roughly 5 times more transmissible than the flu. That makes for a very bad combination. We are not overreacting. Letting this virus just rip through our communities without mitigation would end up shutting down the economy anyway, and we'd have many more deaths. We're doing the right things, and hopefully sometime soon we'll be able to make smarter, more focused decisions as our testing improves. We'll be able to restart elements of our economy as we go along, but we've got to catch up on testing capabilities and we've got to replenish medical supplies and personnel.
