I never use smoke when I harvest honey but if I they start getting pissy when I am working them, I use smoke to calm them down. To me it seems cumulative when you don’t. Midday, warm and sunny helps a lot too. If you have a good bees, sometimes smoke isn’t necessary at all but sometimes it is to keep them calm.

I would also recommend always buying a nuc versus a package. So many advantages.
