your last paragraph, pulling a/c air thru the attic door. It's hard to get a good seal and more insulation would accomplish the same thing without having to blow hot air out of the attic. You could also explore radiant barrier.

The whole house fan would be preferable but you would need to add more vents to allow the air to exit.
