It's really a Japanese thing, not an Asian thing. Chinese uses the "L" sound
a lot, as do most other Asian languages. It does not exist in Japanese.
When I lived in Japan, a Chinese lady name Lily Li (a BYU grad, BTW) worked for me. The poor Japanese couldn't pronounce her name. They called her Ree-Ree-Ree.
