^^^ I agree ^^^ Try to increase time under tension for the muscles.
That is why assisted pull ups are actually quite good. But do as many as you can with your own body weight first.

If a guys can't do unassisted pull-ups, I think it's best to start with pull-downs for a lot of reasons.
