Val was a joke as an AD. The epitome of a unqualified crony-hire.
It's imperative for BYU to hire an AD who thinks out-the-box. Yes, you have to mind BYU's bureaucracy, of course — but the challenge is to lead the bureaucrats beyond where they're willing to go.
Which means you can't go & hire one of your bureaucrats for that job.
But w Bateman in charge that's of course what you're gonna get.
