We did this as well using a mold. If I had to do it over, instead of pouring

directly on the path, I would pour them all on a sidewalk/patio and let them completely dry before setting them individually; essentially make my own pavers. But it depends on your look. Some molds look like rocks and don't need to line up as perfectly, but mine looked like brick and it is a bit tough to get them to line up perfectly to looklike pavers. Also, the color and texture is slightly different from bag to bag so in some places you can sort of see where one bag ended and one started. We used the Quikrete that has fibers in it and it held up well in the 2 years or so that we had it down before we moved.

The big benefit to making the pavers is that you can mix individual pieces from different bags so you do not end up with entirely different colored sections...the color is not THAT different, but it is noticeable.  It's also easier to make curves when you can place them individually versus trying to curve entire molds.

Tips if you just want the mold to go down in place:

  • It has to be super flat or you will have raised edges.
  • Use a string to mark your line.
  • Keep a spray bottle handy.   Once the concrete is in the mold, you can spray the top down and make just the surface wet to smooth it with a trowel.
  • 3 capable people make it go about twice as fast as 2 people.   We got about 2 1/2 molds per bag if I remember correctly.   While the 2 are setting the mold and pouring and smoothing, if the 3rd person is mixing the next bag in a separate container, you can just move from mold to mold.
  • The polymeric sand is quite a bit more expensive, but it really holds well.   It needs to be refilled a bit after several months and tough weather, but it lasts quite a bit longer than regular sand.
  • I would pour at least a couple of extra molds on concrete to have some extras.  Over time you will probably lose an individual section/paver or two to weather or a bad pour.   They are easy to replace if you have a few pavers ready to go.
