Reason #1 why I hate the state of California: The Franchise Tax Board.
HCBW had a tax issue develop a few years after we got married from the time when she lived in California. Long story short on this one, her certified tax preparer did her taxes wrong, telling her she didn't owe anything on an inheritance to the state of California. We did not find out about this until 4 years later.

They ended up putting a lien on our house here in Utah and one of the things we're doing is paying off this lien as we refinance.

We're just about to finish our refi and we needed a statement from the franchise tax board for closing.

As we look through the statement we find that she was also assessed $3,000 more for 2007. We don't ever remember receiving any notification on this or any correspondence saying that she owed for this year. Because she did not as we had gotten married in 2006 and she moved to Arizona with me.

So now, we have to still do this closing, and then try to go to the franchise tax board and get money back that they stole from us.

They did try something similar with me back in 2005. I had gotten a notice from them. I had moved to Arizona in 2004.

I don't even remember if I sent anything back, or called and disputed it, but nothing ever came of that.

I'm thinking that because she had this tax lien that they just slapped this other year on there.

Hopefully we'll be able to get our money back.
