I'm guessing many are sports they wanted a reason to drop but couldn't under normal circumstances due to "Stanford Community" pressures and donations.

Probably has a lot to do with the optics of funding sports with the endowment. Perhaps there is a stipulation that it cannot be used for sports. I am not the one with the better understanding you are seeking.
