The time I murmured about my 7 year olds flag football coach.
So this new guy in town volunteers to coach flag football. He’s a hardcore Packers fan based on the jersey and hat he wears every practice, and definitely would give the impression he knows a thing or two about football.

First practice, they spent 90% of the time doing one-on-one or one-on-two flag pulling drills. Runner has to stay between the cones and avoid the flag pull. When I coach, I like to spend lots of time on fundamentals, so I was happy to see this.

Fast forward, six practices later, and still at least 90% of practice time has been spent doing this exact same drill over and over. We’ve got a game in two days and I’m wondering why haven’t they practiced any plays? They’ve got talented kids , but they have no idea how to play a “football game.”

Oh well, it’ll be a rude awakening but whatever.

It was rude, they got their little butts kicked in the first game. Left the game thinking, “we’ll at least know he knows what he’s up against and will get an offense and defense going next week.”

Nope, same practices. WTY? Seriously, I was shocked. Same result on Saturday, only worse as we played the best team.

Next week, no changes, other than when he texted to cancel practice last minute, two dad's chimed in that they would hold practice. They did and frantically tried to teach the boys some things to increase their chance of success on Gameday. One practice wasn’t likely to make much difference and it didn’t.

The league commissioner, a girl, told me she had offered to help after witnessing the train wreck week-after-week and he blew her off. She told him their were some dad's on the team that would be happy to help and same response. No we’re all ticked at this guy, not because he outed himself as having no clue what he was doing, but because he was gonna die on that hill and these kids were gonna have a terrible season.

Big picture, they’re young and they don’t care about being competitive as much as the post game snack, but it was pretty brutal to watch. I didn’t talk crap from the stands or really to anyone except in private to another couple dads scratching our heads on what we could do.

Guilty for murmuring, but watching this unfold was like death by a thousand paper cuts.
