CoachSpeak Intervention Needed
So colleges don’t really have health insurance on athletes in the manner most..
people probably think that they do.

So for our son we needed to provide the school with all of our health insurance information when he enrolled and the health insurance from the school is probably closer to gap insurance than an actual first tier policy.

Essentially if he is injured or needs medical service while he’s a player at the school our insurance covers him first and if there is expense ours doesn’t cover then the schools “gap” policy covers the remainder.

I’m not sure how that works with poor kids who don’t have any insurance to begin with, maybe they get a full policy from the school, but for us that is how it is set up.

That said most basic stuff doesn’t go through the insurance, stuff like their physicals, covid tests, basic treatment for minor injuries like sprained ankles or hammy strains, those just get treated by the teams medical staff. But if it requires a surgery then it goes to insurance. Our insurance.
