Let’s keep two things in mind

It wasn’t their first day playing football. It was thier only their first game of the year. Their defense was supposed to be one of the strongest they had ever had based on last year’s performance

They were in the correct positions for the most part, they were just pushed around and outmanned

The NFL has preseason games that don’t count. They don’t want to stop that.
