“Box office”: Tenet vs Mulan
*This thread is not about COVID response, by governments or theaters. Start a related thread if you want to debate that*

Tenet’s opening weekend pulled in $20.2m domestic, with $140m+ worldwide.

Normally $20.2m domestic would be a pretty horrid opening for a movie with a $200m+ production budget, but major cities still don’t have theaters open, the ones that do may not be at full capacity, and there are other people generally hesitant to go to the movies.

Mulan has a similar budget, but the numbers are more indirect. As the linked thread states, Disney+ app saw a 68% increase in downloads, with a correlating increase in in-app purchases. I have no idea how to do any back of the napkin math there, but the one thing KingDave missed in the linked thread was an increase in Disney+ subs. Presumably many of the people that were downloading the app had to then sub to Disney+ for $7, which was surely part of the game plan. Whether those subs will then stick around, who knows.

While we don’t know how much Mulan made, Trolls Worldwide with a similar, but different, direct streaming model made ~$100m in 3 weeks. And that’s revenue that they don’t have to split with theater chains.

There are tons of movies on schedules from now until Christmas. Both Tenet and Mulan seem to have done ok considering the circumstances, but it’s definitely a better than nothing situation. Other studios have to be crossing their fingers that NY and LA and the rest of the country opens up even more by the time their date comes.
